what is the problem with my gardenias?
At my old house I had a huge gardenia which had layered itself in several places with well established roots. I dug up a couple of these and moved them to the new house. I put them in the ground and they didn’t do well. They didn’t die, but they didn’t seem healthy, leaves have a tendency to turn yellowish, they didn’t flower this summer. I gave them plenty of water, they got part sun, and I gave them fertilizer for acid-loving plants and iron. Someone told me it was ‘nematodes’, and because I dug them up from roots that had layered, they were susceptible. They told me I should get grafted gardenias on nematode-resistant root stock. That’s all very well, but what can I do with the plants I already have? I dug them up and put them in big pots so that the nematodes wouldn’t be able to get at the roots. What can I do now to help them survive and thrive in the pots? I’m in central florida.
Gardenia http://easybloom.com/plantlibrary/plant/gardenia is a finicky, finicky plant. Moving the gardenias can cause the gardenia to drop it’s buds. If I understand you, you’ve now moved your gardenias twice.
1) Try finding a sunnier spot–gardenias actually like sun (though not too much heat).
2) After that, stop moving the plants around.
3) You should be fertilizing your gardenia every MONTH during growing season.
